Water and Your Skin

Not all water will clean your skin the same. “Soft” water is better for your skin than “hard” water. Hard water is water that has high concentrations of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Soft water is water that has had these minerals removed through a process called “softening.”

With hard water, it’s more difficult to keep your skin clean. Because of the way the minerals in hard water chemically interact with soap, hard water makes it more difficult to properly lather soap and more difficult to rinse off the soap lather. When unwashed soap residue remains on your skin, it can clog your pores and thus cause acne.

Even without soap, hard water can cause problems for your skin. A little bit of the minerals in the hard water remains on your skin; these deposits can dry up your skin’s moisture and oils that help prevent dryness.
