Know Your Water Rights

It’s easy for us to take for granted the water that comes streaming out of the faucet every time we push the handle, but where does that water come from? Who is in charge of making sure the water is safe? What water safety standards are they using?

Under the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendment of 1986, you actually have the right to know all of this information. The act allows you know:

  • The source of the water that comes into your home
  • Where the water is purified
  • What contaminants the water has been tested for
  • Any past or present contamination problems

Additionally, the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 requires that the public be notified within 14 days if water contamination is discovered. To learn more, visit the United State Environmental Protection Agency website. It’s important that you never take your water rights for granted and that you have a good idea of what the government isand isn’t testing for in your water.
